Elk Grove Village
70th Anniversary
March 2026
Seventy years ago, in 1956, the Elk Grove Village we know today started to take shape. The vision. The determination. The influences. They are all part of the story. As we approach the anniversary of our 7th decade, we take a look at where it all began and how we’re focused on the future.
Dallas-based Centex Corporation acquired 1,200 acres of land to build a meticulously planned community.
In 1956, Elk Grove Village started with a humble population of just 116 residents.
The growth of O’Hare airport has always played a pivotal role in the community.
Industrial Park Leads to Economic Powerhouse
While the residential portion of Elk Grove Village grew slowly, the eastern half of the community exploded into an economic powerhouse. Thanks to the golden age of American manufacturing and the aforementioned massive growth of O’Hare airport, the Elk Grove Village Business Park expanded rapidly. What began with just 90 companies in 1962, now spans over six square miles and houses more than 5,600 businesses -- making it the largest consolidated industrial park in North America. The success of the commercial section of the Village has impacted virtually every part of community life , providing for top-tier schools, parks, and infrastructure while keeping residential property taxes low.
