When we ride in an airplane or use our smartphones, we don’t think about the precision that goes into creating every critical part that make up these products. But that is exactly what Crafts Technology does - finds solutions to the weakest link in product construction.

No one does it better

Since the late 1800s, Crafts Technology, a division of Hyperion Materials & Technology, has been developing products that require superhard materials to achieve maximum wear life, corrosion resistance, and optimal performance for each application. Today, they lead in shaping and fabricating diamond and tungsten carbide into special shapes - specifically, small holes. Their tools can drill a hole in diamond material that is 10X smaller than the diameter of a human hair. They also specialize in grinding techniques that can create intricate shapes in some of the hardest materials on Earth.

Solutions for the weakest link

In practice, this means building tools for work where tolerances are nearly invisible to the human eye. A semiconductor company, for instance, may need to deliver a droplet of adhesive or insulation measured in nano-liters to a precise point on a circuit. Crafts produces the nozzles and components that make that possible, using materials designed to endure heavy wear while maintaining accuracy.

“People come to us to solve the weakest link in the construction of their products – issues with wearability, durability - because they know Crafts Technology can work with the toughest materials at the highest precision."

Jeff Taylor, President, Crafts Technology

Servicing a range of industries

Crafts is an expert in its field because they haven’t changed their mission since their inception. By focusing on their strengths and refining their expertise, they have become trusted problem-solvers for three of the most specialized industries today: aerospace, semiconductors, and medical.

Within the aerospace industry, they help keep the aircraft together, delivering special tooling for composite aircrafts to make counter sinkholes for riveting. Their micro-holes and nozzles for dispensing fluid have been vital to the semi-conductor market. In the medical field, their tools are used to mold the highest-precision parts such as syringes, blood tubes and pipettes.

“A wartime effort”

The pandemic provided Crafts with the opportunity to deliver one of their most interesting projects to date. During COVID, there was a huge demand for rapid testing vials that held the chemical reagents needed for accurate results. The problem was that medical product companies couldn’t produce the plastic vials fast enough. Crafts was brought in to find a solution—and in just three weeks, Crafts' tooling was used to produce millions of COVID test kit vials, a process that would normally take 14 weeks.

Taylor explains, “We usually produce things in a sequential fashion to minimize risk, but in this instance, we produced in parallel to meet the needs of this unprecedented time. Everyone was up for the task. It felt like a wartime effort.”

A focus on the future

If you were a semiconductor company building phones and you needed to put nano-liters of adhesive or coating or electrical insulation into the most precise spots, Crafts can deliver the tooling to get it done. In the years ahead, they’ll continue innovating in aerospace, semiconductors, and medical technology fields where precision and reliability are paramount. Whether you’re going into space or making phones, Crafts - purchased by Hyperion in 2020 - is doing things on the smallest scale, with the hardest materials and with the highest precision.
